Burscheid is a small town in the Rhein-Hunsrück district, located about halfway between Cologne and Frankfurt am Main. The old town center is on a hill and has a well-preserved medieval appearance. The highlights of the town include the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, built between 1268 and 1370; the Town Hall with its Gothic ribbing; and the Black Madonna of Burscheid, which is said to have been brought to Germany from Constantinople in 1057 by Count palatine Hermann II.
