Shumanay is an ancient town in Uzbekistan located about 300 kilometers southeast of the country’s capital, Tashkent. The town is considered to be one of the most important historical and archeological sites in Uzbekistan. Shumanay was founded in the 6th century by a group of Zoroastrian refugees who had fled religious persecution in Iran. The town later became one of the main centers of Zoroastrianism in Central Asia, and it remained so until the Soviet period.
