The city was founded by the Swedes in 1703 as Lovgàs and acquired its present name in 1757. It is one of the oldest Russian cities. Today, it is a major center for trade and commerce, with a population of around 330,000 people. The city has many attractions, including a fort built by Peter the Great, an Orthodox cathedral dating back to the 14th century, and several museums.
