Rumson is a small town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, located about midway between New York City and Philadelphia. The town was founded in 1694 by Robert Treat from Rhode Island and was originally called Rumson Neck. The name was changed to Rumson in 1869 to honor George Washington Rumsey, a Quaker philanthropist who funded the construction of the George Washington Bridge. The downtown area is notable for its well-preserved architecture including several Victorian era homes and the Rumson Library, built in 1909 as one of the first public libraries in Monmouth County.
