Kargopol is a small city in the Karelia Republic, Russia. It was founded in 1775 by Baron Dmitry Ivanovich Wrangel who named it after his hometown of Kargopol in Ukraine. The city is located on the banks of the Kola River, and has a population of around 20,000 people. Kargopol is home to several interesting attractions, including the Church of the Ascension (1796), the Governor's Mansion (1810), and Kazan Cathedral (1778).
