Khasavyurt is a small town in the republic of Dagestan, Russia. It is located on the Derbent River, about 50 km west of Dagestan's capital city, Makhachkala. The area has a long history and archaeological sites dating back to the Neolithic period have been found there. Khasavyurt was founded in 1723 by Crimean Tatar refugees who had fled the persecution of Ottoman Turks. Today it is an agricultural center with a population of around 30,000.
