The city had long been abandoned by its inhabitants until 1859, when a British expedition led by John Hanning Speke discovered it while looking for a trade route to Khartoum. Today, Rosetta is well known for its charming old town and for the archaeological ruins of its Temple of Osiris, which include inscriptions in three scripts dating back to the 3rd century BC.
