Candelaria is a small town in the province of Matanzas, Cuba. It is located on the banks of the Candelaria River, east of Havana. The area was first settled by the Taíno Indians in the 16th century. The town was founded in 1776 by Don Pedro de Rivera y Morales, who named it after Saint Candelaria, patron saint of Spain. In 1892 Candelaria became a municipality. Today it has a population of about 10,000 people and is home to many colonial-era buildings.
