It is located on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, about 6 miles (10 km) east of Republic and 10 miles (16 km) south of Mount Spokane. It occupies 9,456 acres (39 km2). The fort was named for General William T. Sherman, who commanded its construction during the American Civil War.
