Andrews, located in the Appalachian Mountains of southeastern Virginia, is a small town with big history. The town was founded in 1758 by Scots-Irish immigrants and was named for General James Andrew Melvill, Earl of Stirling. Andrews has seen its share of tragedy, including the September 11 terrorist attacks and the coal mining disaster of 1902. However, the town's most famous moment came on May 21, 1865, when Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant arrived to liberate it from Confederate forces led by General Robert E. Lee.
