Paterson was first settled by the Dutch in 1630 and became part of the United States as part of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The city has been the site of numerous important events in American history, including the Revolutionary War Battle of Paterson (1779), where American Patriots under General George Washington inflicted significant casualties on British forces; and the 1927 Lindbergh kidnapping, which led to modern day aviation regulation.
