Canton is a city on the north shore of Massachusetts Bay in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The population was 25,936 at the 2010 census. Canton is part of the Boston metropolitan area and is also close to New York City, Providence, Rhode Island and Cape Cod. It was first settled by Europeans in 1629 as part of the Plymouth Colony and was officially incorporated in 1641 as a town named Dover after Dover, England.
