Berkley is a city located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area, in the U.S. state of California. With a population of 212,591 at the 2010 census, it is the fourth most populous city in the Bay Area and the third largest city in Contra Costa County. Berkley was founded by Captain Benjamin L. Bowden in 1847 as a general store and trading post on an isolated block of what is now downtown Berkley opposite what is now Trinity Churchyard; prior to that, this area was known as Ygnacio Valley.
