Frankfort is a historic city located in Franklin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,411 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The town was laid out on July 11, 1819 by James Winchester and named for General Joseph Frank Howard, who helped to liberate the city of Paris from Napoleon's army in 1814. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Leonard. The town became an important center of trade and commerce during the late 19th century due to its location on the railroad line between St. Louis and Chicago.
