It is located about 45 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and is known for its Mediterranean-style architecture and for its many Baldwin Hills recreational areas. The town has a population of about 74,000 as of the 2010 census. Laguna Beach was founded by Captain Thomas Larkin in 1887, and he named it for the Laguna Beach lake.
