Hanford is a small town located in the center of the state of Washington. The population of Hanford was just over 27,000 in 2016 and it has been called "the most contaminated place on Earth". Hanford was founded in 1911 and at its peak, it had a population of over 100,000. However, by 1989 when the plant began to fail, the population had dwindled to just over 6,000.
