It is situated on the western slopes of the Pennines, 10 miles from the city of Liverpool and 12 miles from Wigan. The town has a population of around 18,000 people. Bebington's main attraction is its castle, which was built in 1080 by Robert de Mowbray, Earl of Northumberland. The castle has been used as a jail and a military base throughout its history.
