Guildford is a town in Surrey, England, located about 20 miles south of London. It has a population of around 107,000 and is the administrative centre of the Borough of Guildford. The town's name comes from its former status as the Royal Manufacturing Town for cloth. The area now known as Guildford was first settled in the 5th century AD and was part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex. In 1070, King Edward the Confessor granted land to a group of monks from Bec Abbey in Normandy, who founded Guildford Cathedral.
