Dewsbury is a town in West Yorkshire, England. It is located on the River Aire about 18 miles south of Leeds and 6 miles north of Huddersfield. The town has a population of around 80,000. The area now known as Dewsbury was part of the ancient kingdom of Deira, which was in turn part of the Roman province of Britannia. The Normans founded a settlement here in 1066 and the town grew rapidly as a market town for the surrounding agricultural districts. The railway arrived in 1849 and led to further growth.
