Rochford is a town and borough in Essex, England. It was the administrative centre of the Rochford Rural District until its abolition in 1965. The town had a population of 61,575 at the 2011 Census. It has been suggested that Rochford may have been founded by the Romans as Coggeshall or Goggeshalla; it certainly became an important market town by 1202. The Normans built a motte-and-bailey castle here in 1086, which subsequently passed into the hands of the Plantagenets before becoming a royal residence.
