The town's history stretches back to at least the Iron Age and it was originally centred on two small settlements on either side of the River Medway: Crayford to the north-west and Bromley South to the south-east. In 1842, Bromley became part of Kent. The first industries in Bromley were brewing and distilling, which started in the early 1800s.
