It's home to the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, and is also known for its World War II airfields and later space program. Today, Gagarin is a quiet town with plenty of attractions for visitors, including the Museum of Cosmonautics, which has exhibits on the history of space exploration; the Gagarin State Regional Museum- Memorial Complex dedicated to the late Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin; and a memorial to all Russian cosmonauts.
