Protvino is a small town in the Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Oka River, about 45 miles east of the city of Chelyabinsk. Protvino was founded in 1784 as a settlement for Cossacks who were working in the mines near the town. In 1905 it became part of Russia and was renamed Protvino after Prince Pavel Petrovich Volkov, one of Emperor Nicholas II's closest advisers and a protégé of Count Pyotr Nikolayevich Tolstoy.
