Kurgan is a small town in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. It is situated on the right bank of the Kurgan River, about 100 kilometers southwest of Kazan. The town has a population of about 10,000 people. Kurgan was first mentioned in writing in 1547. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, it was an important trade center on the Volga trade route between Moscow and Kazan.
