Kotelnich was founded in 1781 by Russian settlers from Tula Province. The town's name comes from the Russian word for chestnut tree, kotelnyak. Today Kotelnich is a popular tourist destination due to its historical buildings and natural attractions, such as the Belaya River and the Kotelnich caves.
