Alta is a small town in the far north of Norway, and it's well worth a visit for its charming old buildings, beautiful lakes and mountains, and interesting history. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1881, and today it retains a lot of its German character with bakeries and pubs serving Weissbier (a type of wheat beer) on tap. Alta is also home to the Sæterlia ski resort, which has some great skiing in winter.
