Pyongyang is the capital and largest city of North Korea, with a population of 3.25 million as of 2009. It lies on the Yalu River just above its estuary on the border with China and was founded in 1797 by General Yi Seong-gye, according to legend. The city was originally called Kaesong after Mount Kaesong, where a Korean Buddhist temple had been built in 653 AD. The modern name first appeared in 1884 when the government decided to rename all of the provincial capitals.
