It is located on the banks of the Rio Grande and was founded by Francisco Xavier Mina, who named the town after his birthplace of Matamoros, Spain. The town flourished as a cotton production center in the early part of the 20th century, but has since declined in importance. Today, Heroica Matamoros is known for its colonial architecture and for its annual San Isidro festival, which celebrates St. Isidore of Seville.
