Amatitán is an ancient Mayan city located in the Guatemala Highlands, northeast of Antigua Guatemala. The ruins of Amatitán sit atop a high bluff overlooking the Río Usumacinta. The ruins cover an area of about 25 hectares and are among the most extensively preserved Mayan archaeological sites in Central America. The site was first explored by archaeologist Sylvanus G. Morley in 1907 and has been extensively excavated since then.
