Esil is a small town in the Zhanaozen Province of Kazakhstan. The sleepy town has a number of attractions, including the Monastery of St. Panteleimon, which is one of the oldest in Kazakhstan and was founded in 860 AD. The monastery houses a number of impressive frescoes and also has an interesting collection of manuscripts. Other attractions in Esil include the nearby Lake Issyk-Kul and the village of Kokshetau, which is home to an art colony that features local artists working on traditional Kazakh handicrafts.
