It has a population of just over 10,000 people and is well known for its many traditional festivals and historical sites. The town's name may come from the Ainu word "chiri" meaning "to flow", which may be why it was originally named after a river. Among the attractions in Chiry are the Tōso River and Shiroyama Park, both of which offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
