Sinjar is a mountainous region in northwestern Iraq. It's home to the Sinjar peshmerga, an ethnically Kurdish militia that has been fighting Islamic State militants since 2014. The region is also known for its Yazidi community, which was targeted by IS in its campaign of genocide. Sinjar contains numerous archaeological sites, including the ruins of the ancient city of Ishtar-Shushan.
