Mandal is a small town in the Nineveh plains, located about 170 kilometers east of Mosul and 50 kilometers south of Tal Afar. The town’s name means “gateway” in Arabic, and it was once one of the largest settlements in the area. Today, Mandal is mostly rubble and uninhabited due to years of violence. However, it is still possible to visit some of its old sites including the ancient citadel, the mosques and shrines, and the archaeological museum.
