The city of Sh shtar lies in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, between the Zagros Mountains and the Persian Gulf. It is one of Iran's oldest cities, dating back to at least 2500 BC. Sh shtar was founded by the ancient Assyrian king Sargon II in 715 BC as a military outpost on a strategic route along which he planned to conquer Media and Lydia. The city prospered under the rule of the Achaemenid dynasty and later passed into Roman hands.
