Karaj is a city located in the Central District of Tehran Province, Iran. It has an estimated population of 1,377,000 as of 2006. The city is situated at an altitude of around 1000 meters above sea level on the western slope of the Alborz mountain range. Karaj was founded in 1609 by Kavous Seyed-Emami, who named it after his father-in-law, Shah Karaj Khan.
