Al Bahnas is a small town in the Eastern Desert of Egypt. It is known for its oasis and ancient ruins. The town has a population of 2,500 and lies about 165 kilometers east of Cairo. Al Bahnas is an important archaeological site because it was the capital of the 19th Dynasty. It contains remains from pharaonic, Roman, Byzantine, Mamluk and Ottoman periods. The most famous ruins are those of the Temple of Ptah-Sokar, which was built during the Middle Kingdom (2000-1700 BC).
