Liberians are descendants of African slaves who were brought over by the British in the early 1800s to work on the sugar plantations in Jamaica. Liberia gained its independence from Britain in 1847. The country was ruled by various monarchies until it became a republic in 1980. Today, Liberia is a developing country and has a population of about 4 million people.
