Turpan is a city in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China, located about 190 kilometers (118 miles) east of the regional capital Urumqi. It has an estimated population of around 850,000. The name Turpan is thought to derive from the Uighur word "turban," meaning "to boil or cook." Because of its strategic location near the old Silk Road route, Turpan played an important role in trade during ancient times. Today, it remains an important commercial center and transportation hub.
