Karamay is a small town in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, located about 650 kilometers east of Beijing. It has an elevation of 3,000 meters and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The town was once famous for its cotton production and now attracts visitors with its remote and peaceful setting. Highlights include the Old City, with its winding streets, colourful markets and interesting architecture; the scenic valley of Yili River; and the Karamay Bear Park, home to more than 150 bears from different parts of China.
