The town has a population of about 2,000 people and there are several attractions in Mahalapye including the Mahalapye Wildlife Reserve and the Mahalapye Dam. The wildlife reserve is home to lions, elephants, buffalos, zebras, giraffes and many other animals. The Mahalapye Dam is a hydroelectric dam that was built in 1974.
